How do Scientists know that 280 million years ago that Dinos walked this earth?

First, geology. Dino fossils are found in very old strata. Geologists can provide a very close estimate (within 1%, or so) when a particular strata was laid down. If you find certain fossils in that particular strata, then you have a very good timeline for when that particular animal lived and then died.
